We all know that brushing and flossing are the best way to keep your smile looking its best, but top natural teeth whitening tips include enjoying foods that are “tooth friendly”, and avoiding ones that are trouble go a long way toward keeping your smile sparkling and your gums healthy.

Your teeth are strong and pretty resilient overall, but if you have any with root canals or fillings that tooth is typically weaker. Bite down on something hard (ice, hard candy, olives, fruits that have pits or unpopped popcorn) and you’re more likely to suffer a crack or fracture in such a tooth, and an emergency trip to your dentist to boot.

When it comes to a great looking smile, one of the best (not the easiest mind you) thing you can do is to limit snacking. Beyond adding calories to your diet, snacking interrupts the flow of saliva meant to cleanse the mouth and teeth to remove cavity-producing substances. Constant snacking continually exposes your teeth to substances that erode enamel, which is why experts suggest you limit eating to three meals a day. If you do snack, choose a food that’s healthier, as these are less likely to cause tooth decay.

To ensure your smile always looks its best, here are seven things to add to your diet…

1. Water is the most natural, calorie free thirst quencher around, and helps to wash acid producing foods from the teeth and mouth.

2. Sugar free drinks are ideal if you like something with a bit more taste. These also serve to wash the acid producing food from the mouth.

3. Sugar free gum increases the flow of saliva, this helps to neutralize acids in the mouth and thus protect the enamel of the teeth. This is a great choice when you’re craving something sweet, but are watching your calorie intake.

4. Citrus fruit though acidic also increases the flow of saliva. Oranges, grapefruits and other such fruits offer protection to enamel because they contain a lot of water that washes away food and acids.

5. Cheese and milk not only encourage saliva production, the proteins in these foods also act as a buffer against acids so the enamel of the tooth is protected from erosion. There are studies that suggest these foods might possibly strengthen the protective minerals found in the surface of your teeth.

6. Fish and flax are thought to reduce inflammation and offer protection against gum disease. Omega-3 fatty acids are the most potent anti-inflammatory nutrients, and people who eat a lot of them are more resistant to both inflammation and infection, perhaps gum disease as well.

7. Cocoa has substances that keep inflammation in check and might also help protect teeth against erosion and decay. Dark chocolate is lower in sugar than the milk chocolate variety. And chocolate milk, which does have some sugar, does not appear to up the risk of cavities.

Now that you’ve seen what to add, here are some things to avoid…

Get A Bright, Healthy Smile With These Foods… Continued…

1. Sugary drinks: When the bacteria in the mouth break down simple sugars they produce acids that can erode enamel and create pits where cavities form. Because we sip them, these drinks raise acid levels over a long period of time. Carbonated drinks are especially bad, as the carbonation ups acidity. Some research has singled out sports drinks as the worst offenders.

2. Candy and sweetened snacks: No surprise here since most of these are loaded with sugar that increases acid levels in the mouth. Sticky and gummy candies are the most destructive choice of all because they adhere to the tooth surface, making it hard for saliva to clean the teeth.

3. Sugary breakfast foods: These have a mix of sugar and starch, more likely to get stuck in the plaque between teeth. Ready to eat breakfast cereal, pastries and many processed (though highly convenient) breakfast foods are best avoided if you want to maintain a healthy smile.

4. Some starches: Breads, pasta, rice and potatoes raise the destructive acid levels in the mouth. The more refined (or cooked) a starch is, the more likely it will raise acid levels. Raw starches don’t endanger tooth enamel.

5. Coffee, tea and red wine: Beyond the fact that these beverage tend to stain the tooth surface, these drinks are typically sipped, allowing the acid levels in the mouth to remain high over a much longer period of time.

So, by following these natural teeth whitening tips you can have a bright and healthy smile with minimum intervention and cost.

Finally, some good news for balding men. Receding hairlines may just be good for you according to U.S. researchers out of the University of Washington School of Medicine who have found that men who lose their hair by age 30 seem less likely to develop prostate cancer.

The results of the work suggest that having high levels of testosterone (the hormone blamed for baldness) from a young age might protect against prostate cancer.

The findings appear in the journal Cancer Epidemiology.

The work was a population based, case control study that involved 2,000 men between the ages of 40 and 47, half of whom had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The team compared the rate of tumors in the subjects who reported their hair had thinned by 30 with those who didn’t lose their hair at this age. Men who had started their thirties with bald spots on top or receding hairlines had a 29-45% reduction in the risk of prostate cancer.

Earlier work has been inconclusive in terms of a link between male pattern baldness and prostate cancer. Some had suggested that bald men are more likely to get prostate cancer, which makes the new finding quite interesting. The work certainly shed some light on how the hormone behaves in the body. It is possible that both prostate cancer and male pattern baldness are problems that are influenced by the male sex hormone.

By the ripe old age of thirty, about 25-30% of men will have some hair loss, with half of all men suffering significant hair loss by the half century mark.

Baldness comes when hair follicles are exposed to too much dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a chemical produced by testosterone. Those who have high levels of this hormone are more likely to lose their hair, even more so if baldness runs in the family.

Prostate cancer is the third most common cause of cancer deaths in men of all ages. No one knows what causes this form of cancer that starts in the small, walnut sized structure that’s part of the male reproductive system.

Why All Men Should Want to Go Bald… Continued…

Previous research has shown a link between high fat diets and increased testosterone levels. The good news is that as a result of PSA testing, most prostate cancers are found before they cause any symptoms.

Interestingly, prostate cancer patients are often given medications to reduce their testosterone levels. If these hormone levels are too high they are thought to accelerate the growth of certain tumors once they’ve developed.

Dr. Helen Rippon, head of research management at The Prostate Cancer Charity, says: “Clearly, the age at which a man begins to lose his hair is unfortunately not a risk factor for prostate cancer over which he has any control. However, if these results are correct, they could be useful in providing us with a greater understanding of how testosterone behaves in the body and how it can affect different tissues.”

The research does have limitations. The biggest of which is that the men were relied upon to remember what their hair looked like at least ten years before, and there were no photos to confirm the state of their hair. More work is sure to come.

You may have heard (and believed) the expression, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but there’s new study that might just turn this conventional wisdom on its head, finding that the conclusions we arrive at after first meeting someone are rather accurate after all.

We know the role that physical appearance plays in creating first impressions, but little research has been done to evaluate the accuracy of those impressions that are based on appearance alone until the unique study that appears in the December 2009 issue of Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

“In an age dominated by social media where personal photographs are ubiquitous, it becomes important to understand the ways personality is communicated via our appearance,” says Laura Naumann of Sonoma State University. “The appearance one portrays in his or her photographs has important implications for their professional and social life.”

Certainly something to think about before you upload that profile picture.

This intriguing study involved more than 100 undergraduate students at the University of Texas, some were assigned to be subjects, the others were personality judges.

Two full body photos were taken of the subjects, in one they posed just as the researchers told them, staring at the camera and not smiling, feet shoulder width apart, hands at the sides. In the next photo the same subject was photographed in natural, spontaneous poses.

Their true personality was gauged by a questionnaire they filled out themselves, as well as surveys completed by three informants who knew them well.

The judges then evaluated the subjects based on the photos for ten personality traits. When looking at the posed photos, the judges were able to guess three traits -extroversion, self-esteem and religiosity.

The more spontaneous photos allowed the judges were able to guess almost all ten traits (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, openness, likeability, self-esteem, loneliness, religiosity and political orientation) accurately. The accuracy of the judgments of the subjects was gauged by comparing them to the aggregate of self-ratings and the information provided by the informants.

“We have long known that people jump to conclusions about others on the basis of very little information,” researcher Sam Gosling of the University of Texas says in a written statement, “but what’s striking about these findings is how many of the impressions have a kernel of truth to them, even on the basis of something as simple as a single photograph.”

This Doctor Dropped 10 Sizes – Discover Her Shocking Secret

There’s an overwhelming body of research that shows most diets aren’t effective in the long term because they work AGAINST the body…

In fact most people who diet end up putting ON more weight than when they started.

It’s because most diets deprive you of the foods you enjoy, stop you getting the nutrients you need…basically forcing your body into ’starvation mode’…

Joy Siegrist MD developed a diet that works WITH your body…one that has a 96% success rate.

And to prove it she used it to drop 10 dress sizes.

First Impressions ARE Accurate Continued…

The team concludes that the results suggest that personality is shown by both static and expressive channels of appearance, and observers use this information to form an accurate judgment.

Judging personality traits in women was found to be harder because females are more likely to be influenced by cultural demands to follow fashion, to look a certain way.

What’s more, you might be able to alter your appearance in subtle ways to lay claim to certain traits, or shape another’s impression of you.

For example, smiling or relaxed poses give the impression of warmth and friendliness. Looking healthy, neat and stylish while standing in an energetic or less tense pose presents you as an extrovert.

Someone more open to experience might not be the neatest dresser, but will have a distinctive style that hints at their adventurous traits.

In light of the work, perhaps the expression should be, “Sometimes you CAN judge a book by its cover.”

Nature is an amazing thing, and according to some University of Georgia research appearing in a recent issue of HortScience, there are some plants that can actually remove dangerous airborne contaminants that might be found in anyone’s home – even yours.

Things like harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, toluene, octane, alpha-pinene and trichloroethylene (TCF).

Adding a few living green plants to your home or office may do more than just add some warmth and bring the outdoors in, it might also help to clean the air.

In all, 28 indoor plants were tested by Stanley Kays, Ph.D. of the University of Georgia and his team to see which might remove contaminants (a process known as phytoremediation) from the air.

The plants were put in glass, gas tight containers and then exposed the plants to some organic compounds you’d find indoors. The plants did a good job of removing the contaminants from the air.

In fact, there might be thousands of plants that are able to remove airborne contaminants, but the team found 5 “super ornamentals” with the best rates of contaminant removal. The best included:

- Red ivy (Hemigraphis alternata)

- English ivy (Hedera helix)

- Variegated wax plant (Hoya cornosa)

- Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus)

- Purple heart (Tradescantia pallida)

No one can explain why some plants are able to do this and others show little promise, but science continues to dig for the answers. “We also want to determine the species and number of plants needed in a house or office to neutralize problem contaminants,” Kays explains. “The idea that plants take up volatile compounds isn’t as much of a surprise as the poor air quality we measured inside some of the homes we tested.”

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are likely in the air of any home, given off by your furnishings, carpet, plastics, building materials (drywall, paint, solvents, adhesives), cleaning products and perhaps even your tap water.

Turns out that the air in our homes and offices is a concentrated source of these pollutants – astonishingly some indoor spaces can be up to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air.

Cure For Unhealthy Air – Houseplants Continued…

Dangerous VOCs have been linked to conditions like asthma, cancer, neurological and reproductive disorders.

They claim about 1.6 million lives a year according to a 2002 World Health Organizations report. Since 1957, experts have identified fifty million organic and inorganic chemicals and registered them in the CAS system.

Not all volatile organic compounds are toxic, and there are plants that emit VOCs too, though most of these don’t appear to be dangerous.

Some plants are better for certain toxins than others. Today there is no test you can do inside your home to check for toxins, but the hope is that in the near future there will be an affordable test to help you identify the contaminants in your home, along with a list of the best plants to clean the air.

“Ideally, we’d have an extension service that would send out a packet that would do the test for you to send back and get recommendations,” Kays concludes. There are scientists in Korea who are well ahead of the U.S. in phytoremediation, and have already looked at 86 species in an effort to identify one that might remove indoor formaldehyde.

In the meantime, you might consider adding a few ornamental plants to your home or office not just to upgrade the look of the space, but to take advantage of the potential air quality benefits they might bring.

Want to have your skin looking healthy, golden and glowing? You don’t have to spend hours in the sun, risk your health in tanning beds or spend a fortune on special creams and cleansers to get a healthy body blow.

Instead, the answer to glowing skin is a lot easier, and more natural – eat lots of fruits and veggies – this according to research set to appear in the December 2009 International Journal of Primatology.

It’s a rather unexpected beauty tip that comes to us thanks to a study that took place at the University of St. Andrews.

Participants, 54 white men and women, used specialized computer software to adjust the skin color of the faces of images for both men and women. The goal was to make the complexions look as healthy as possible. The participants chose to enhance the rosiness, yellowness and brightness of the skin tone.

“Most previous work on faces has focused on the shape of the face or the texture of the skin, but one of the most variable characteristics of the face is skin colour,” said study leader Dr. Ian Stephen who is now a member of the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Bristol.

Earlier work found that those who have more blood, and therefore more oxygen in their skin looked healthier – this latest work sought to find out what other colors might affect our perceptions of good health and good looks.

Rather than getting a suntan, the team suggests a far safer, and still 100% natural way to get that glowing, healthy look – eating lots of those good-for-you fruits and veggies.

Melanin, the natural pigment in skin that causes it tan when we’re out in the sun, also causes it to darken and carry more yellow tones. The preference of the participants for this coloring may be explained by carotenoid pigments, a natural part of many of the fruit and veggies we eat.

These compounds are also responsible for brightly colored birds and fish, helping them to attract mates. The researchers believe that similar biological mechanisms might be at work in the human body as well.

Beyond making skin look healthier, these natural plant pigments are known to be powerful antioxidants that absorb dangerous compounds produced as the body combats disease and stress.

A rosy complexion is known to be a sign of a strong heart, healthy lungs. It’s well known that those who smoke or have diabetes do have fewer blood vessels in their skin, and this tends to make their complexions less rosy and less healthy looking.

“This discovery is very exciting and has given us a promising lead into cues to health,” points out Professor David Perrett, head of the Perception Lab at St Andrews University, where the study was conducted. “What we eat and not just how much we eat appears to be important for a healthy appearance. The only natural way in which we can make our skin lighter and more yellow is to eat a more healthy diet high in fruit and vegetables.”

So if you’re after that healthy body “glow”, and golden skin, eating lots of fruits and veggies is a better and safer way to get it. Certainly safer than tanning under the sun or by using a tanning bed.

When it comes right down to it, there’s no magic formula or miracle cure to staying healthy and cut disease. The things you need to do are things we all can do…

1. Don’t smoke – if you do, try to quit

2. Get active – at least 3.5 hours a week

3. Stay away from junk food and follow a diet rich in fruits and veggies,

whole grain breads, with limited amount of lean meat.

4. Watch your weight – keep the BMI under 30

Not altogether surprising suggestions – public health officials have been saying these things for years.

The startling news is the benefit some recent research has found to doing all four things at the same time.

Living this way cuts your risk of developing some pretty serious chronic diseases by almost 80%. The result holds even after adjusting for things like age, sex, education and occupation status.

The recommendations come from a report in this month’s Archives of Internal Medicine that analyzed the lifestyle, diet and health of 23,513 German adults who were from 35 to 65 years old and part of the European Prospective Investigation Into Cancer and Nutrition-Potsdam study.

Begun in the mid 1990s and covering an eight year period, the work found that subjects with healthy habits were far less likely to be diagnosed with conditions like cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

The team analyzed each person’s body weight, height, disease history, food frequency and how well they stuck with the four healthy lifestyle tips.

Only 9% of the subjects followed all four recommendations, but most of the participants practiced from one to three of these good-for-you habits.

All in all, following all four healthy habits combined was linked to…

· 93% lower risk of type 2 diabetes

· 81% lower risk of heart attack

· 50% lower risk of stroke

· 36% lower risk of cancer

These findings reinforce the idea that making simple, everyday changes to a healthier lifestyle is worth the effort.

It’s clear that healthy habits can have a huge impact on your health over the long term. If you’re concerned about living well into your later years, this study points out things you can do today – stopping smoking, keeping your weight under control, being more active – to keep your body healthy.

Healthier, disease free living starts with you. All you have to do is commit yourself to these four totally natural lifestyle choices to keep your body in shape.

If you smoke, you probably know it’s time to stop. Luckily there’s help quitting from support groups, nicotine replacement therapy, hypnosis or with medication – talk with your doctor to see which option is right for you.

All it takes is a simple change, like cutting down on junk foods is a painless but practical first step. Before you know it you’ll have dropped a few pounds, maybe discovered some healthy foods you actually like.

Once you’re eating better you’ll be more inclined to get up and exercising, which will show rewards almost at once in how you feel.

Before you know it, you’re living better, you’ve cut disease risk, your feeling better, and on your way to a healthier, happier life.

While we all know time spent baking on a beach without sunscreen is not a good idea, there are other, more routine things we all do that can be just as damaging to our skin and lead to UV skin damage.

Since skin cancers account for just about half of all cancers in the U.S. according to American Cancer Society numbers, making some simple changes in your behavior this summer, and from now on, could help you beat the odds.

Here are ten surprising things we all do that put our skin at risk:

1. Driving without sunscreen – the glass in your car windows and sunroof doesn’t block UVA rays that cause damage to all types of skin.

2. Sitting in the shade without sunscreen – damaging UV rays bounce off water and sand, even into shady spots.

3. Using old sunscreen - if it’s from 1-3 years old, you need to replace it, then mark the purchase date on your new bottle, so you’ll know when to get rid of what’s left. Also, don’t store sunscreen in the car as the heat can cause the ingredients to separate and oxidize.

4. Not applying sunscreen often enough - most of us use only 25-50% of the recommended amount. For sunscreen to work, you need to use the right amount, which is about a shot glass full, applied all over your body and rubbed in well. Reapply after 2-3 hours, or when you come out of the water or are doing heavy work or exercise that makes you sweat a lot.

5. Not wearing sunscreen on a cloudy day - UVA rays penetrate clouds more readily on these overcast days than UVB rays do, so while you might not feel the heat or see the sun, days with cloud cover aren’t without risk of sunburn or other damaging, aging affects.

6. Expecting protection from a “base” tan - a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found exposure to UV rays during indoor tanning is harmful to eyes as well as skin cell DNA, leading to premature aging.

7. Using water-resistant when you need waterproof - there’s a big difference (40 minutes of sun protection for water-resistant; 80 minutes of sun protection for waterproof) between the two formulas. Still no matter which you choose you need to re-apply after time in the water

8. Not protecting your head with a hat – to cover your head, the tops of your ears and neck area (or any thinning spots up top) that aren’t normally exposed to the sun, or protected with sunscreen.

9. Relying on regular clothing as protection – some manufacturers have created new items made from Ultraviolet Protective Factor (UPF) that offers 97.5% protection from the sun. By contrast, a white tee offers an SPF of 7/8 if dry, but only 3 when wet.

10. Taking medications like certain antibiotics or antihistamines – these drugs increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun, causing sunburn that can be rather severe. Anyone taking these medications should stay out of the sun, wear (and avidly re-apply) sunscreen and remain indoors as much as possible.

The best way to protect yourself from skin damage, besides watching out for these ten little-known hazards, is to wear a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 that will bring you 95% protection.

Ten Of The Least Suspected Sources Of Skin Damage continued…

Sunscreen is the best thing you can do to protect your skin, but remember the number on the bottle doesn’t mean you’re that many times safer, it simply means you’d burn that many times sooner without product.

Higher SPF’s bring incrementally more protection, but not even SPF 50 gets you to 100%. Re-applying rigorously with a lower SPF is just as protective as using a higher number less vigilantly.

And since SPF only refers to the protection against UVB rays, the FDA has taken its time developing new labeling guidelines for sunscreen manufacturers.

These products will soon be sporting a 4 star UVA rating (low, medium, high or highest), though the companies have a year to 18 months to implement the changes once put in place.

While you’re waiting, look for at least one of these UVA protective ingredients – avobenzone, oxybenzone, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or ecamsule in any sun protection product you buy to help avoid UV skin damage.

While more education is no guarantee of anything these days, there is one area where more schooling has been shown to offer a benefit. And that is education linked to your own personal health.

A new report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Commission to Build a Healthier America finds that those with more education report better health than those with less education.

In every state, adults with less education are more likely to rate their health as less than very good, as opposed to those adults who’ve graduated from college.

The Commission looked at data from the U.S. Census Bureau as well as Centers for Disease Control surveys done between 2005 and 2007 where over 174,000 adults from 25-74 rated their own health as either excellent, very good, good, fair or poor.

This is the first attempt at ranking U.S. states based on reports of health and education achieved.

According to the findings, the more education a person has, regardless of ethnicity or race, the more likely they were to report better health.

Overall, 45% of the survey respondents rated their health as less than very good, with those who hadn’t graduated from high school being 2.5 times more likely to be in less than very good health as were graduates from college.

High school graduates, who did not receive college education, are almost twice as likely to be in less than very good health as adults who had graduated from college.

Even a few years of education was enough to make a difference in how healthy a person believed themselves to be.

And though disparity in education level and reported health status exists in every state, there are some places where it’s particularly strong.

In Mississippi for example, 73% of high school dropouts reported their health as less than very good, while only 37% of the state’s college graduates did the same.

California is another state with a large gap in numbers between less and more educated citizens.

This report adds to the growing body of evidence that social factors (like education) do have an impact on health.

The Commission is convinced there’s more to staying healthy than focusing on health care. Education, income and other factors aside from things considered by traditional medicine may also help determine how healthy someone is, and how long they might live.

Less education often leads to fewer job opportunities, lower incomes and lots more financial stress.

What jobs there are less likely to offer health insurance, so less educated workers will naturally put off preventative care. Sick days in these jobs are more likely to be unpaid, so less educated workers force themselves to go in because they just can’t afford to stay home.

Education Has Huge Impact On How Long and How Well You Live continued…

And speaking of homes, those with less income have much more limited choices and may be forced to live in an unhealthy home or a neighborhood with more potential risks.

If you have more education your job prospects are probably better, the pay and benefits allowing for you to attend to your health, and the health of your children.

You get paid if you stay home sick. Your doctor may take you more seriously, and you’re better able to be your own advocate in terms of care and treatment options.

What’s more, you have many more choices in terms of where you live and how you live, your home is more apt to be well constructed and in a safe area.

The Commission has made a point to offer ten recommendations to Americans for improving their health that are based on two ideas, that people need to make healthier choices for themselves and their families, and society needs to remove obstacles and promote opportunities to help people make these types of choices.

Until these goals are reached, all of us will keep falling far below the level of good health we might have.

Wondering why the weight isn’t coming off?

Consider this – you might be unknowingly interfering with your goal, even if your resolve to shed those extra pounds is rock solid.

This according to new research just seeing a healthy food option on a menu actually tempts you to chose a fattening food instead.

It doesn’t make sense, but according to researcher Gavan Fitzsimons, PhD a professor at Duke University who led the study, we’re all subject to what he calls “vicarious goal fulfillment”.

Before you dismiss the idea entirely, consider that while fast food places and vending machines have more healthy options than ever before, analysts point out that the sales of the fast food industry aren’t coming from those healthy items, but rather from the sales of calorie laden staples like burgers and fries.

We see the salad, but order the value meal instead.

This latest bit of research supports the idea that once we feel we’ve done something right, even if that’s just thinking about choosing a healthy option from a menu, we feel entitled to a reward.

“We’ve found that the presence of a healthy item leads people to choose the one that is the least healthy on the menu,” Fitzsimons tells online health resource WebMD.

“Just seeing the healthy item and considering it makes you feel you’ve done your duty. It’s crazy, but it’s human.”

Here’s how the team uncovered this bit of self-deception we feed ourselves.

Participants in a study who’d scored high on measures of self control and food were asked to choose a food from one of two menus with pictures.

Half of the subjects saw a menu with only unhealthy choices like fries, chicken nuggets and a baked potato loaded with butter and sour cream. The other half of the subjects saw the same menu, but with the addition of a side salad.

When the salad was a choice, some subjects did choose it, but many more of those most self disciplined participants selected an unhealthy option. Even more curious, the effect was strongest among those who normally have lots of self-control.

For whatever reason, consumers seem to have the tendency to ease off on the self control when something healthy is an option.

Its as if they feel the goal has been met just by seeing, and perhaps briefly considering, the visual. This appears to happen outside our conscious awareness.

In other variations of the study, participants also made unhealthy choices. Most choose a calorie laden bacon cheeseburger, chicken sandwich and fish sandwich over a healthier veggie burger. For desserts, they picked chocolate covered Oreos, original Oreos and golden Oreos against cookies labeled as only having a 100-calorie.

One thing that could help with vicarious goal fulfillment is to constantly remind yourself of your intentions.

No single human emotion has received as much attention, inspired so many actions or brought so much wonder and joy to our lives. In short, love is happiness.

Love makes the world go around, keeps us together and may even be responsible for some incredible benefits to your body as well.

Not only lowered blood pressure and better stress management but fewer colds and shorter hospital stays.

Can it be true? It can, and there’s hard and fast science to back it up.

1) Married people make fewer visits to the doctor, and have shorter hospital stays than singles, this according to a review of studies by the Health and Human Services Department summarized in a June 2007 report.

2) Getting and staying married reduces depression in both men and women. Marriage also contributes to a decline in heavy drinking and drug abuse. This finding also comes from the June 2007 Health and Human Services Department report.

3) Happily married people had the best blood pressure readings, followed by singles. Unhappily married, as you might imagine, had the highest blood pressure according to a study appearing in the March 2008 Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

4) Loving, stable relationships provoke less activation of areas in the brain known to produce anxiety. Researchers at the University of New York at Stony Brook used functional MRI scans to evaluate areas of the brain and presented these findings at the 2008 Society for Neuroscience conference.

5) Loving, stable relationships make you less likely to complain of headaches or back pain. This too comes from the Stony Brook research, but holds even more weight because of a supportive CDC report on a study of more than 127,000 adults.

6) Social support, including loving relationships helps with stress management, making stressors easier to face.

7) Loving relationships can give the immune system a boost, making you less likely to get sick after exposure to a cold or flu virus. This according to research at Carnegie Melon University published in the November 2006 Psychosomatic Medicine.

The power of a positive relationship might help wounds heal as much as twice as fast as those of couples who are most hostile with each other. This comes from work in December 2005 out of Ohio State University Medical Center.

9) Married people live longer according to an ever-increasing body of work on the topic. Data from the National Health Interview Survey found those who’d never been married were 58% more likely to die younger than those who were married.

Why Being In Love Is Good For Your Health… continued

10) Love is more important that money. Research has shown that while happiness might come from income to a point, in the end it’s the quality of family relationships that brings lasting satisfaction. This bit of wisdom is based on work appearing in the June 2008 issue of the Journal of Family Psychology and relies on data that tracked married couples for more than a decade.

“There is very nice evidence that people who participate in satisfying, long-term relationships fare better on a whole variety of health measures,” reports Harry Reis, PhD, the co editor of the Encyclopedia of Human Relationships.

A key distinction is the love we’re talking about here isn’t the intense, passionate, can’t-live-without-you type of relationship but rather a calmer, enduring more stable form of love. Let’s face it, while the other type might be exciting and vital for a while it’s almost impossible to maintain.

Reis also points out that while many of the studies referenced here focused on married couples, it is the quality of the relationship, whether traditional marriage or deep love for a partner, parent or friend that delivers benefits to your overall health.

Love is happiness as any relationship that brings a feeling of being connected to another person, one where you feel respected and valued for yourself can bring not only good feelings and a sense of belonging, but better health as well.
