Feel More Confident In Your Skin

Feeling a bit down about how you look… experts tell us that boosting body confidence is 90% mental and has little to do with losing weight, getting a makeover or buying a store’s worth of clothes and jewelry. Here’s what they suggest…

Prepare... don’t decide on the day of a big event what clothes and accessories you’ll wear. Pulling things together at the last minute leaves you rushed and liable to forget something or encounter some other unexpected mishap. Just a bit of extra time in planning what you’ll wear, ensuring it’s clean and pressed and ready can make a huge difference in how you look, and feel.

Remember, others are insecure too. Almost always they are so busy worrying about how they look they don’t have time to think about you. They don’t see what you hate about your hair, your clothes, your mannerisms.

Fake it. Pretending isn’t just for kids, spend five minutes each morning before you leave and picture yourself looking good, imagine how those you encounter will also think you look good. Plant a message of confidence in your mind as you begin the day and in time you’ll come to believe it.

Put the phone away. Checking it every second makes you look bad… tells everyone you’re not available to pay attention to them, or anything new. What’s more, the blue light makes you face look sickly.

A lot of how you look comes from the clothes you wear. To get help with this we’ve taken the advice of wardrobe consultant Terri Ghio who runs The Style Institute, a coaching program for personal stylists. Too many of us dress like we did in high school or from a look we saw in a magazine or catalog that isn’t at all suited to us.

Here’s some help…

Pull out your favorite outfit, the one you wear a lot and has you feeling like you look great. Try it on and consider why it’s right… the color, cut, fabric. Use this outfit as a guide.

Shop for your body shape… your real shape. No matter how smart and elegant something is, no matter how good it looks on a mannequin, if it’s not made to suit your body shape, it won’t look good and you won’t feel good in it.

- Find the one thing you love about your body, and work to focus attention on that.
Whether it’s a haircut to frame your face, a style that hides a spare tire, look for what flatters and stick with those styles. Invest in the best quality basics you can afford.

- Stop staring in the mirror, it’s way too easy to get obsessed about looks. So check your teeth and hair, take a quick look at the full view of your outfit and then go about your day.

- Match every negative thought about your body with at least one positive one.

Exercise, even a half hour a day, will have you feeling better about your body, how it moves and how you feel. Over time, this will bring real, visible results too.

10 Unexpected Things Harming Your Immune System…

You’re doing all you can to keep yourself healthy, and yet you still come down with a cold… fever or worse yet, the flu. There are things that aren’t all that immunity. So keep washing your hands, drinking all the orange juice you like, and avoiding close contact with anyone who is obviously sick, watch for these added immunity sappers.

You’re breathing polluted air: The smog in the air isn’t doing
your lungs or your immune system any good. Research has shown that dirty air causes inflammation in the body and suppresses T cells, essential in terms of your immunity.
Invest in an air purifier for your home or office so you can breath easy inside.

You’re sitting too much: If you have a desk job, you likely spend
lots of time in the chair at your desk. This can slow down your
metabolic rate, causing your body to naturally absorb immunity
boosting nutrients at a slower rate than normal. Every hour and a
half, get up and step out of doors for a five-minute break. The
movement will activate your muscles, fire up your metabolism, and
the fresh air will wake you up, make you feel more alert.

You’re using the wrong beauty products: Things like foundation,
concealer and lipstick not only sit on your skin, they are absorbed into the body all day long. Some of these products have artificial ingredients that your immune system isn’t used to breaking down, so the bad stuff can readily slip past your internal defenses. Go all-natural with as many products as you can. The fewer ingredients a product lists, the safer it is for your body and immunity.

You’re eating too much white flour: The white flour in some
baked goodies actually impairs the T cells and B cells, both key illness fighters in the body. Make sure the grains you’re eating are
primarily whole grains, as they have lots of immunity building fiber.

You don’t make sleep a priority: If your body doesn’t produce
enough melatonin naturally as you sleep, your immune system isn’t
able to make the white blood cells it uses to fight off bacteria
and keep your body in good repair. Try for seven to eight hours of
sleep each night, and make getting that a priority, not a luxury.

10 Unexpected Things Harming Your Immune System… Continued…

You’re eating too much animal protein: Too much animal protein
causes the body to naturally produce more of the IGI1 hormone, known to speed up the aging process and impact your immunity. Try to keep your intake of meat and dairy to 10% of your daily intake of calories. You might even consider cutting animal protein consumption even more, to about 5% of your daily intake, and you should see a difference.

Your diet doesn’t have enough good fat: Healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fats from fish, avocados and nuts do have anti-inflammatory properties that help improve your immunity. So avoid the processed foods, limit your intake of animal protein,
but try and add foods such as salmon, sardines, almonds and kale.

You’re lonely: Lonely souls tend to be less resilient in terms of stress, which causes the immune system to struggle. If this is you, schedule some time with those you like, friends, co-workers, neighbours, members of groups of like-minded people. People who have more relationships in their lives also appear to have a greater resistance to infection.

You think you thrive on stress: People think they work well under pressure, but long term stress brings up cortisol levels, and this reduces levels of other hormones like testosterone and estrogen.

When hormones are out of balance, your immune system can’t react to threats as quickly. Learn how to stress less, or find quick ways to relax.

You’re not doing yoga as part of your workout
: This type of workout appears to have the most impact on Immunity as it stimulates the body’s circulatory, digestive, endocrine and nervous systems, and these all work together to make the immune
system stronger. There are tons of tips out there for beginners so there’s no reason not to give yoga a try.

Detect Signs Of Nutrient Deficiency

Our bodies are amazing… they can sometimes tell us when something’s wrong before a doctor can confirm it with tests. If you start to see a change in your own body… in your hair, your nails, your skin or even your energy level… this could be a signal from your body that a vital nutrient is missing from your diet.

Some of the signs your body might give you…

Unhealthy looking nails

Healthy strong nails are a sign of good overall health and strong immunity. What you don’t want to see on nail surfaces are white spots (injury), raised ridges, an inward curve or nails that otherwise look less than healthy. Most often unhealthy looking nails are a sign you need iron (not zinc, that’s a popular myth) so try to include as many natural sources of iron (red meat, fish, poultry, lentils and beans) as you can in your diet.

Interesting that you’re not alone, according to the World Health Organization, iron deficiency is the leading nutritional disorder the world over.

Leg cramps at night

Cramps in your legs or calves at night are a sign that you’re lacking potassium, and essential nutrient. This can happen easily if you’re exercising hard during the day, losing both fluid and electrolytes and only replacing the fluid. Rehydrate with electrolyte rich drinks or try some potassium rich foods like bananas, spinach, broccoli or grapefruit.

And while healthy adults should get enough potassium from food sources, often we don’t. Your doctor may recommend a potassium supplement, or you might try upping natural sources for a time and see if this helps.

Numb hands or feet

If you feel like your hands (or feet) go numb or you get tingling or a prickling feeling in your limbs this can signal a low intake of B vitamins like B6 or B12 and folic acid. Deficiencies of B vitamins directly impact the peripheral nerve endings on the skin’s surface. You’ll want to eat lots of dark leafy greens like spinach and lean proteins like eggs, beans and poultry. Fortified whole grains are good too.

Again, deficiencies of this nutrient are surprisingly common, with about 15% of the general population affected by a deficiency.

Detect Signs Of Nutrient Deficiency Continued…

Small red or white acne like bumps on your skin (face, arms, even thighs) can signal a vitamin A deficiency. This nutrient helps to remove dead skin and unclogs pores to discourage the growth of acne bacteria. Veggies or other foods rich in beta carotene (a precursor to vitamin A) are key here.

Sadly vitamin A deficiency is a problem for more than half of all nations, especially in Africa and South-East Asia.

It’s important to realize that if you are deficient in one nutrient, based on your body signals, you are likely lacking others as well. It’s hard to believe that with the abundance of food in the developed world that nutrient deficiencies happen at all, but as you see, they are surprisingly common. Once you take steps to address them, you’ll be feeling and looking better than ever – a signal from your body that all is well.

10 “Feel Good” Tips To Start The Day

Starting the day off right really can make all the difference. What happens in those moments after you wake up does set the tone for the rest of the day. When things go smoothly you feel less stressed, capable to face what’s coming; when things go wrong, run behind, the day can’t end fast enough.

While it’s impossible to avoid bad mornings, here are ten simple things you can do, right at the start of your day, to keep your mood upbeat, have yourself ready for the day.

1. Plan on spoiling yourself, give yourself 30 seconds to think of one nice thing you can do for yourself that day, and do it. Whatever you enjoy, planning it first thing in the morning will help you feel more upbeat, before you even get out of bed.

2. Eat a well-balanced breakfast by starting your morning with a mix of complex carbs and proteins you’re getting things off on the right track. Eating a good breakfast keeps you feeling full until lunchtime, giving you energy to manage the tasks ahead. Try oatmeal or toast and peanut butter. Plus, indulge yourself with a moderate amount of caffeine, about 2 cups a day, as this also has been shown to raise mood and sharpness.

3. Get some fresh air, doing some exercise outside, even if you only have a few minutes, will have you feeling better. Just 5 minutes outside is all you need, so take a walk, a pass through your garden or just open a window and breathe in. The same benefit comes by exercising near water or with water sounds in the background.

4. Listen to the sounds of nature, whether recorded or simply with the window open. People have been shown to recover from stress more quickly when listening to recorded nature sounds, so adding these to your morning can really help your mood.

5. Focus on feeling good, after you wake, take five deep breaths and make the conscious decision to feel good for that day. Even as you run across frustrations and challenges, taking time to do this simple exercise makes you more inclined to breathe and stay mindful, rather than react emotionally, when challenges arrive. During the day, take five deep, intentional breaths and remind yourself of your choice to have a good day.

6. Drink hot chocolate. Research has found that sipping a drink that is a natural source of cocoa flavonols helped mood and levels of alertness in study subjects.
It’s a delicious alternative to coffee or tea.

7. Assess your body, don’t jump right up in the morning, instead take five minutes to pay attention to your body and how it’s feeling. Then do some light stretching while taking deep breaths and you will find yourself more in touch, and present than before.

8. Imagine the negative, that is, think about a positive thing in your life now and imagine what you life would be without that blessing. Imagine yourself without that dream job, unmarried or without children. This technique has actually been shown to improve mood more than thinking of the positive event itself.

9. Breathe in the scent of mint as researchers have found that sniffing peppermint improved mood and attention while also fighting tiredness. Try inhaling the scents of essential oils just as you wake up. Peppermint gum is another good option as well.

10. Smile, because this is a gesture you can do anywhere, a simple, natural way to change your own mood, and the moods of those nearby as well.

Stay Healthy, Looking Young With White Tea

Turns out that while tea has been used as medicine for many hundreds of years, science is just getting around to finding the evidence to support what the Chinese and others around the world have always known, tea is good for you. New research on white tea finds it actually may be helpful in cutting the risk of cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and even age related wrinkles. A team from Kingston University came together with the folks at Neal’s Yard Remedies to check out the health properties of 21 plant and herb extracts and found that all of the plants they tested showed some potential, but white tea outperformed every one.

This type of tea is the least processed of all the teas (black, green, and oolong) and comes from immature tea leaves picked before the buds fully open, yet it also has the most antioxidants. Experts know that dangerous free radicals come from being out in the sun too long, being under stress or eating a poor diet and are able to wreak havoc on the body. Antioxidants neutralize them and white tea has lots of protective antioxidants known to be helpful in terms of cancer and heart disease.

The team of UK researchers and businesspeople tested eight plant extracts and herbs that protect the proteins of the skin, specifically the ones known as elastin and collagen. Elastin supports the natural elasticity of the body and this helps your lungs, arteries, ligaments and skin. It also assists body tissues in repair and keeps skin from sagging.

Collagen is a protein, the most abundant in mammals, naturally a part of connective tissues and is key for skin strength and elasticity. It’s often described as the glue that holds the body together and is in tissues like skin, ligaments and tendons as well as in the bones, blood vessels, the cornea and the digestive tract.

Stay Healthy, Looking Young With White Tea Continued…

The results of the research demonstrated that white tea prevented the activities of the enzymes that break down elastin and collagen, the process thought to lead to unsightly wrinkles. These enzymes, with oxidants, are also linked to painful inflammatory disease like rheumatoid arthritis. The UK researchers were startled to find such high activity with white tea extracts in all five of the tests that
were done.

In fact, the team was amazed by just how well the white tea performed, even though they used very small amounts (less than you’d get in a regular cup). The indications are that white tea cuts the risk of inflammation that is characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis and wrinkles as well as some cancers.

The research is a step in the right direction for companies like Neal’s Yard Remedies. The findings will help them create safe, effective and cutting edge products.

Now that you know a bit more about white tea, why not give some a try? A single cup once in a while is a good start. Drinkers of this tea tell us that it has a delicate taste, subtly sweet and slightly floral… very different from other teas you may have tried. It blends well with all types of fruits so you might like either a flavored or unflavored variety.

14 Habits To Be And Feel Awesome!

Something to think about. Your quality of life is dictated, to a large extent, by your physical health. We all understand that eating right and exercise are keys to doing this, but there’s more to being healthy than what you eat or how much you exercise. Taking things to the next level calls for more… like these 14 habits to help you live better, feel better.

1. Meditate as this has some serious benefits to your health. Regularly taking 10 to 20 minutes to relax and focus on you is one of the best-kept secrets to living longer and better. It helps with reducing stress, sleeping better, keeping blood pressure lower, improving your immunity and cardiovascular function. You’ll also feel so much better just by routinely disconnecting from all the stimulation and stress of our modern world.

2. Sleep is still a luxury for many of us, but it really can make (or break) your healthy lifestyle efforts. You need to be getting somewhere between 7 to 8 hours a night, and playing catch up on the weekend won’t help. Research finds that lack of sleep disrupts our brains’ ability to rid itself of toxins from the body. As a result this can impact (and not in a good way) the functioning of your brain.

3. Drink water with lemon, as it’s refreshing, zero calorie, all-natural.

4. Drink tea because beside water, tea is likely the best drink for your body that you’ll find. Regular intake of green tea can help memory and thinking in men according to research. Green tea also is believed to have many other benefits – lowering blood pressure, preventing bad breath, firing up your metabolism, helping immunity and supplying an anti inflammatory agent to the body.

5. Floss as this won’t only be good for your teeth, but this essential dental habit will improve your health in other ways too.

6. Take probiotics daily as they can boost good gut bacteria and keep your digestive system running smoothly. They’re good for immunity as well. This can even have an impact on mood because (surprisingly) a lot of the body’s serotonin is really produced in the gut.

7. Warm up before a workout but don’t do a static stretching type of warm up; rather begin with a dynamic muscle warming routine with lunges and high skips. This enhances performance while also helping to prevent an injury.

8. Sweat with interval training as according to a study from Liverpool John

Moores University along with the University of Birmingham, high intensity interval

training (HIIT) can give the same benefits as those you get from endurance training,

but you’ll get them in a whole lot less time.

9. Stay away from BPA; short for Bisphenol A, the chemical used in many everyday products including water bottles and the inner linings of food containers. Research has found links between being exposed to BPA and reproductive problems, diabetes and heart disease.

10. Clean up your skincare because your skin is your biggest organ, and taking care of it is very important. That means using sunscreen and being choosy about what you put on your hair and skin. Avoid harsh chemicals… check labels for sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. Not only do these chemicals strip moisture and protective barriers but they also become toxic when combined with other things in common skincare products.

11. Wear sunglasses as protecting your eyes is important, and the only way to do this is by wearing a pair of sunglasses. Choose a pair that has 99 to 100% UV absorption or UV 400. The bigger the glasses the better the protection.

12. Get more fiber a key part of any healthy diet. A diet with enough fiber will keep your body running smoothly, research shows that higher fiber intake actually helps you live longer. Fiber may also aid weight loss, help moderate inflammation, lower blood pressure, cut the risk of diabetes and decrease bad (LDL) cholesterol.

13. Go green at every meal. If you don’t have something green on your plate, you’re not giving your body the best nutrients. The antioxidant packed leafy greens are some of the best. You might also try green powder like spirulina, a green-blue algae that’s loaded with protein, omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, Zinc, iron and beta-carotene.

14. Have more sex as research is supporting the idea of sex helping your look and feel younger, as well as cutting stress, boosting immunity, enhancing sleep, protecting against prostate cancer and improving cardio health. A study has even found that the more sex you have, the longer you will live.

Good Tips To Look Great During Cold Season

This time of year, it’s hard to avoid getting a cold. One of the best things you can do for yourself when you feel a cold coming on is to get enough good quality sleep. Sleep is the time when the body, and your skin, repair themselves. Of course if you’re fighting congestion, body aches or a cough, a good sleep isn’t always easy.

But, if you don’t get the right amount of sleep, your body naturally produces a hormone, cortisol, that’s linked to stress. This can make you look just as bad as you feel. Luckily, there are ways to manage the most common challenges a cold brings to looking your best, and we’ve got them here for you.

Fight dark circles
– these look bad because of lack of sleep of course, but congestion and dilated blood vessels can make them look so much more obvious. A quick fix is to cool a steeped tea bag in ice water and put one over each eye. The cold and caffeine will combine to constrict your blood vessels and have you’re eyes looking brighter, less puffy.

Acne can be brought on from the stress that’s a result of lack of rest, causing your skin to produce more oil, which brings on those awful looking breakouts. Over the counter (or prescription) products that have retinol will help keep your acne under control, but they may not be good for skin that’s already red and angry looking.

Turns out that extra moisture is a good choice when you’re fighting a cold, even if your skin is prone to acne. The trick is to avoid the heavy moisturizers and look for something that’s oil free and contains ceramides, good for acne prone complexions without making things worse.

Dry skin can look and feel awful, and is hard to avoid with a cold. Cover up the red, raw area under your nose with petroleum jelly, or try a tissue that has lotions already inside to soothe the skin. Your heating system can make already dry skin even worse, so try using a humidifier to bring some moisture into the air. This will help your skin and may also ease the congestion you have at night, when you try to sleep.

Cracked hands/feet
are as painful as they are hard to look at. Giving these areas a little extra attention as you fight your cold is key. Cover hands and feet with cream and then putt on gloves or socks to help the moisture penetrate your skin. You might even want to try and cover your feet with plastic bags, before putting on your socks, for an added benefit.

Good Tips To Look Good During Cold Season Continued…

Chapped lips really hurt, so always apply a lip balm before you go to bed at night, Look for one with wheat germ, almond jojoba, coconut oils, aloe vera or shea butter. Avoid products that have fragrance or artificial flavors as these will tempt you to lick your lips and remove the protection. You also want to avoid products with beeswax because the wax sits on the surface and doesn’t add moisture. Also stay away from camphor and menthol as these can be drying.

Wrinkles are often more noticeable when your skin is dryer, and this happens when a cold hits because your body naturally uses moisture to make mucus. While you’re fighting the cold, treat your face to a moisturizing mask, and try sleeping on satin pillowcases as they allow your face to slide and this prevents the creases that come from lying on one side for long periods. Sleeping on your back is even better, as you don’t put any pressure on your face.

By following these simple tips you’ll fight off that cold, and look good doing it too.

All You Need To Know About Collagen

We hear a whole lot about collagen, but how much do you know about this most abundant (30% of the protein in mammals) protein? You can think of collagen as the cement that holds the body together. There are over 25 different types of collagens that are a natural part of the body. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg… there’s a whole lot more to this much talked about substance than you ever expected.

Most of us have heard that collagen is a part of our skin. We may know that its essential for keeping skin looking younger as well as holding onto the natural elasticity. Collagen is also found in ligaments and tendons and in the bones, blood vessels, the cornea and even the digestive system. Collagen is also known to have good tensile strength; its what gives cells form from the outside, as well as helping to support most of the tissues in the body as one of the main parts of what’s known as the extracellular matrix.

Collagen is also involved in making blood vessels stronger. When collagen degrades wrinkles and sagging skin appear, skin surface is easier to damage. This amazing substance has been found to do some incredible things…

Injections with “dermal fillers” contain hyaluronic acid, thought to stimulate
the production of collagen, and thus restoring the actual structure of damaged

Science has found that collagen is able to change from a rigid form into a more
flexible state and back. This helps researchers create drugs that cut the risk
of heart attack by keeping collagen from breaking open in arterial plaques. Amazing.

Bovine collagen has been used to help with gum healing.

Conditions caused by collagen defects, like arthritis, could be treated with
a strong and stable alternative to human collagen that’s been created by a group
of researchers from the University of Wisconsin Madison.

All You Need To Know About Collagen Continued…

As you might expect, the passing years take a toll on our ability to produce natural collagen. First production begins to slow and the structures of cells start losing strength. Skin gets fragile, less elastic and wrinkles appear. Hair may start losing its youthful color and shine, joints their past flexibility. Products that offer to halt this decline are understandably very popular.

Modern science has come up with ways to turn back the clock for those who wish to do so. There are injections of soft tissue filler (flexible, tissue like material like human fat or cattle collagen) that you can get from a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Injections are typically given around you mouth and forehead where the first wrinkles usually appear.

If this injections and doctors are not your thing, a topical treatment that works in the deeper layers of skin might be the answer, but you need to be a careful label reader when shopping for these products. Moisturizers will help you look younger, though they work on the outer layer of skin, while creams and supplements that up collagen production work at the deeper layers.

To your good health,

Reduce Wrinkles With These 8 Tips

Your skin says so much about you… so to be sure all of it is good, there are things you can do to help you skin stay soft, smooth and free of years-adding wrinkles. As a general rule, to do right by your skin you need to…

Avoid the sun

Wear sunscreen every day, all year

Wear protective clothing (or a hat) when you are out in the sun

Don’t smoke

Use a quality moisturizer

Let us share with you eight, less well-known ways to keep your skin soft, smooth and wrinkle free.

1. Sleep on your back. Sleeping in some (side, facedown) positions night after night can bring on sleep lines, wrinkles that get etched into that top layer of skin and won’t fade once you’re up and about. To help combat this, sleep on your back as many nights as you can.

2. Eat more fish, especially salmon. This food is a perfectly natural source of protein, a building block of great-looking skin. Any cold water fish is a good source of essential fatty acids that nourish the skin and keep it plumper and more youthful looking, which helps to make wrinkles less noticeable.

3. Stop squinting and get reading glasses. The glasses won’t make you look nearly as old as the wrinkles that come from constant squinting. Making the same expression all the time overworks the facial muscles and forms a groove under the surface of the skin. Over time the groove becomes a wrinkle. So keep your eyes wide open, wear reading glasses if you need them, and get updated about sunglasses that protect the delicate skin around the eyes from damage, and help cut down on that best known of wrinkle builders, squinting.

4. Don’t over wash your face as tap water strips your skin of both moisture and the natural oils that protect against wrinkles. Wash too much and you wash away this protection. Unless the soap you use has moisturizers in it, wash with a gel or cream facial cleaner instead.

Reduce Wrinkles With These 8 Tips Continued…

5. Use products with Alpha-Hydroxy Acids. AHAs are natural acids that lift off the top layer of dead skin cells so that pores look smaller, fine lines and surface wrinkles are eased. Stronger AHAs might even help boost the production of collagen. Be sure to use lots of sunscreen as products with AHAs can also make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

6. Wear your vitamin C. Some research has found that cream with vitamin C can increase collagen production, protect against UVA and UVB damage and help reduce dark spots and uneven skin tone, even easing redness. But it has to be the right type of vitamin C – L-ascorbic acid is considered the best for wrinkle relief, but you can also try products with their vitamin C ingredient listed as ascorbyl palmitate.

7. Soy for your skin may improve appearance and protect it too. Research suggests that soy applied to the skin (or taken as a supplement) might help guard against (or heal) some of the sun’s damage. It’s also been found to help improve the structure of the skin and its firmness, and to even out the skin tone.

8. Trade in your coffee for cocoa. In one study researchers saw that cocoa with high amounts of two antioxidants protected skin from sun damage, while also improving blood flow to skin cells, helped keep it hydrated and made the skin look and feel so much smoother.

Little Known Liposuction Side Effect

Thinking about liposuction… know this. A new study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism finds that women who have the increasingly popular procedure may just be trading one type of fat for another with a little known liposuction side effect.

A sudden removal of abdominal fat seems to naturally trigger the body to buildup fat around the internal organs. Brazilian researchers believe there’s a sort of trade off between the removal of subcutaneous fat found under the skin that spurs the development of more dangerous visceral (internal) fat.

This type of fat, deeper down, is able to wrap itself around your organs, and has been reliably linked to a raised risk for both diabetes and heart disease.

The good news? Liposuction patients who took up an exercise program after their surgery remained free of the subcutaneous fat and mostly prevented the growth of visceral fat. A four month, supervised exercise program prevented the visceral fat the body makes naturally to compensate after liposuction from returning. It also upped the fat free mass and improved physical capacity and insulin sensitivity of the subjects.

The study authors focused on 36 healthy Brazilian women, aged 20 to 35, who had abdominal liposuction from 2010 and 2011. None of the subjects had a body mass index (BMI) over 30 before the procedure – so they were overweight not obese. The surgeries were all termed small volume.

Two months after surgery the women were split into two groups – the first followed a four-month, three times per week exercise plan; the second maintained that oh-so-unhealthy sedentary lifestyle.

Exercisers engaged in aerobic and weight training during this time. Six months after surgery, neither group had regained any fat in the abdominal area that was the target of the surgery, but those in the sedentary group saw an almost 10% increase in visceral fat while the exercisers did not.

It’s not yet clear how liposuction increases the risk of visceral fat growth, but at least we know that exercise can make an impact, can keep that most dangerous type of fat from appearing.

Liposuction Might Have Dangerous “Boomerang” Effect… Continued…

Many plastic surgeons agree with the study findings, that while you can get rid of some fat with surgery, if you don’t change how you eat… how you live… that fat won’t stay away for long. Considering the significant costs and serious risks of this type of procedure, it seems unlikely that anyone wouldn’t want to do what’s needed to prevent the gain of dangerous fat. Cardiovascular exercises are some of the best choices – jogging, swimming, biking, roller blading – anything that gets your heart rate up for an extended time will do the trick. Exercise can, and does, make a positive change… and it’s something you can do for yourself right now.

Other researchers wonder how the findings would play out among those who were far more overweight than the subjects of the study.

It’s important to understand that while popular, accessible and offering appealing slimming and shaping results, liposuction is a serious surgical procedure. Liposuction side effects include a long recovery that may be painful, that may have the surgical site bruised and swollen… so it’s not something to be entered into lightly, without careful thought, investigation and follow up. The best candidates for the procedure are those who are reasonably fit but have localized fat deposits that do not respond to weight control or fitness.
