Boost Fat Loss With Whey Protein and Amino Acids

Fat loss is a key goal when it comes to dropping weight. New research finds that by adding essential amino acids and some whey protein to your weight loss eating plan you may also up your fat loss. The study was conducted on older, obese adults, but the idea might work for dieters of any age, so says study lead Robert Coker, Ph.D. who is an associate professor of geriatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

The group of subjects included 12 obese men and women between 65 to 80 years old who were randomly assigned to either a meal replacement alone group or a meal replacement with whey and amino acids group with both groups also being allowed 1,200 calories per day. The team looked at the 11 subjects who finished the two-month program to see the impact of each meal replacement plan on fat and muscle.

Admittedly 11 isn’t a big number, but it does give us some key information on fat loss when also trying to lose weight.

As to the meal replacements used, Coker examined two types. One was a protein replacement but did not have added amino acids. The second was a replacement with whey protein and essential amino acids. The whey replacement won the test. Adding the whey protein to essential amino acids led to a larger loss of fat.

At the start of the study the meal replacement alone subjects measured about 39% fat, at the end they averaged 37.5% fat. The group using meal replacements that included amino acids and whey measured in at 41.8% fat at the start of the study, but were down to 36.3% fat by the end of the research period.

Both groups lost almost 7% of their total weight, but the whey/amino acid meal replacement eaters lost a bigger percentage of fat to lean tissue. Both groups of subjects started the study at around 200 pounds and finished the program at an average weight of 185 pounds.

Boost Fat Loss With Whey Protein and Amino Acids Continued…

It makes sense that increasing the fat lost during a weight loss program will help you achieve a better, healthier body composition. Coke felt that the whey/amino acid supplement increased muscle metabolism and this might have triggered the bigger reduction in body fat in the subjects.

The results are likely to be the same for younger adults. Other research than Coker’s has shown that this approach could help younger dieters. Whey protein may indeed improve fat loss while helping you hold onto muscle mass that might otherwise be lost as you drop those pounds.

The whey/amino acid meal replacement product used in the study isn’t available to the public. It’s also important to understand that putting on extra weight as the years pass is not inevitable, though it often happens. Yes your metabolism slows down. Body fat starts to increase, while muscle mass goes from about 45% of your total body weight in your younger years to 27% by the age of 70. Less muscle mass translates to a slower metabolism. So you do burn fewer calories in your 50s and beyond doing the same actions as before, but most people don’t adjust their food intake accordingly.

To your good health,

The Best Workout For You

There are many reasons people give for not getting the exercise we know we all should be to stay healthy and strong. Health clubs and gyms turn you off. You don’t have time in your schedule. It’s super hard to get motivated. Or maybe you’ve been inactive so long that you have no idea at all where to start. The experts say your best bet, no matter what you reason for not working out, is to try and find an exercise regimen that works with your personality, your lifestyle and your fitness level today.

So if you hate the gym… can’t stand suiting up for the health club, try things you can do anywhere – at home, the park or the beach. Biking, walking or hiking are all great choices. Or you might do your exercises outside… pushups, crunches, squat jumps and planks are some great activities you can do just about anywhere. And don’t forget about the outdoor group classes going on at parks all over the nation, even in winter. There also lots of adult recreational sports leagues for hockey, soccer or even ultimate Frisbee.

No time for workouts, try doing them right at your desk. Do dips on your chair, do pushups off the edge of your desk, use resistance bands to do bicep curls and tricep extensions. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk about as you talk on the phone, have walking meetings instead of conference room bound ones. All with your boss’ approval of course.

If you’re a social sort, group activities are a great way to get in shape. Dancing is one of the most popular activities, and thanks to TV programs like Dancing With The Stars, people are seeing what a wonderful workout it can be. Another option with dance roots is Zumba, a new exercise craze that has you moving to Latin dance rhythms. There are also clubs for running, walking, cycling or hiking. This approach let’s you share a common activity while also enjoying a bit of socializing.

For those seriously lacking in motivation, sometimes a boot camp (think TV program The Biggest Loser) can be a good way to get yourself up and active, if you are motivated by someone yelling at you that is. A visit to the doctor would be in order before you sign up, but one you get the okay, these increasingly popular camps might be just what you need. Ranging from the mild to the totally crazy, boot camps offer individual coaching and beneficial direction in a group setting. Just do your homework before you sign up or send in a deposit.

A boot camp approach gives you the benefit of a coach, and the peer pressure (or competition) that comes from this type of atmosphere. With everyone pushing to perform at their best, this can maximize your own workout, keep you from indulging in things you know aren’t good for you.

If you have the will but need some pointers on how to workout, consider hiring a certified professional trainer. Do your homework and find someone who has education, experience and is certified by an organization like the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). The right pro can create a workout to fit your needs and situation.

If you can’t afford to hire a trainer, think about teaming up with a couple of friends to split the cost, or take a group exercise class that’s taught by a trainer.

And if, like all too many of us, you are way out of shape, take things slow and start off with activities that will make your lifestyle more active. If you’re seriously overweight or have been very inactive for a very long time, get your doctor’s approval before you start exercising. Some options to try are exergames such as Wii Fit where the intensity is low to moderate, and it’s actually fun.

Women Tell A Cheater by Looks Alone

Get this… according to a paper published recently in the journal Biology Letters, women can tell with good accuracy if an unfamiliar male is faithful to his partner just by looking at his face. Men seem to lack the same ability when looking at women. These findings are the results of a study from the University of Western Australia that sought to examine this most intimate of judgments in an attempt to answer the question; can you look at a guy and tell if he’ll cheat on you?

The research, the first of its kind to successfully tie impressions of cheating with facial features, included 68 heterosexual subjects (34 men, 34 women) who looked at photos of 189 Caucasian adult faces of opposite sex people and were asked to rate them for faithfulness and trustworthiness. The answers were compared to the self-reported sexual history of the 189 people in the photos. The researchers found that the female participants were better able (failing only 38% of the time) to tell who was faithful by looking at a picture.

So it seems there’s a kernel of truth in the idea that a woman can tell, by a look, who will make a better mate. Men however, don’t seem to have a clue. They tended o see attractive, feminine females as unfaithful and failed 77% of the time to be right in their assessment. Maybe a woman’s face doesn’t give clues on infidelity, or maybe men just miss them.

The study, led by Gillian Rhodes from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders at the University of Western Australia, points out that it wasn’t attractive looks but rather how masculine a man looked that signaled he was thought to be more likely to be unfaithful or have a sexual history of infidelity.

In the research paper the authors report that faithfulness in sexual relationships and mate choice is important to females. The cost of choosing an unfaithful partner is significant. Men who have partners who stray risk raising another man’s offspring, while a woman with an unfaithful mate risks being denied parental rights and losing other resources to competitors.

Women Tell A Cheater by Looks Alone Continued…

While many women are aware of the most obvious signs of cheating – attention to or an increase in grooming, being withdrawn and/or argumentative, making or receiving private phone calls and sudden/frequent absences – facial features are a surprising addition to the list. According to a piece in Essence magazine, a Miami researcher has found that the company a man keeps can say a lot about his faithfulness. Get this… 77% of men who cheat have either best buddies or perhaps fathers and older brothers, who also are unfaithful to their significant others. It’s what they know… all they know.

A survey by a website that serves as a highly successful dating service for married people gives us more info on the regular cheater. Website AshleyMadison.com has created a profile of what a cheating man might be like. A man in his 40s, married for over 10 years with kids over the age of 10 and most likely working in fields like engineering, law, medicine, finance and even education. Yikes, this suggests that school teachers can’t be trusted. And it omits politicians and celebrities altogether.

So while the look of a man’s shoes might give you clues to how much he makes, his hands a suggestion of the size of his most private parts, we women now have research to back the idea that a man’s face can give important clues to if he’ll be faithful (or a rat) as a mate.

To your good health,

More Sleep Less Pain

We all understand that pain is a serious intrusion into sleep. New research appearing in the latest issue of Sleep finds that more sleep can improve your ability to withstand pain. Experts like Michael Breus, Ph.D. hold that sleep and pain are tightly connected. Someone who’s sleepy is also likely to be irritable, moody, sad and a bit anxious and this makes any type of pain worse.

What types of pain disturb sleep the most?

- Back pain

- Headaches

- Facial pain from TMJ syndrome

- Musculoskeletal pain like arthritis and fibromyalgia

- Women have visceral, abdominal pain or premenstrual cramping

- Pain from cancer treatment or symptoms

This latest research on pain and sleep included 18 healthy people who were 21 to 35 years old who didn’t have any pain. Half of the subjects spent ten hours in bed for four consecutive nights, the rest kept their usual nighttime schedule. The longer sleeping volunteers ended up with about two hours more sleep per night, and also improved in a test measuring their sensitivity to pain.

The team measured pain by how long the subjects could keep a finger pressed to a heat source. The length of time they could do this increased by 25% in those who were getting more sleep. Earlier research in this area has found that the effect of added sleep is comparable to ingesting a 60 mg dose of codeine two times a day. That’s significant pain control.

If you’re getting eight hours of sleep a night, you aren’t likely to need more according to researcher Thomas Roth, PhD, the director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Henry Ford Hospital. Although just how much more sleep can help improve sensitivity to pain isn’t well understood, experts generally agree that if you’re getting only six hours of sleep most nights, you need to try for more like the eight hours that’s closer to the ideal. The National Sleep Foundation suggests that healthy adults try for anywhere between seven to nine hours of sleep each night.

Sleeping longer appears to decrease your sensitivity to pain. This likely works for all types of pain, acute and chronic back aches as well as other disorders involving pain. The researchers speculate that lack of sleep and pain are both able to increase levels of inflammatory markers, but getting more sleep can help send those markers in the other direction.

More Sleep Less Pain Continued…

Going forward, researchers hope that physicians look at patients before surgery to be sure they are not having any sleep issues that might affect how they experience pain and the amount of medications they may need. Still it’s a long way to applying study results to patients with chronic pain, as the study period was too short.

The best thing you can do for yourself in terms of sleeping is to practice good sleep habits – even on weekends, holidays and when you’re on vacation. If pain is disrupting your sleep more than two to three times each night, or you’re unable to fall back to sleep, you need to talk with your own doctor. There are things that can help your sleep and ease your pain, not just medications but physical therapy or other nontraditional approaches that can ease your symptoms and have you getting the rest you need.

To your good health,

This Helps Against Heart Trouble

A new Canadian study appearing in the journal Circulation supports a common sense notion. Those who have heart disease and eat a heart healthy diet can cut their odds of suffering either a heart attack or devastating stroke. These benefits are in addition to the ones a patient gets from taking meds like statins, blood pressure pills and even aspirin.

To conduct the work, an international team of researchers led by Mahshid Dehghan who is a nutritionist at the Population Health Research Institute of McMaster University in Ontario, gathered information on over 31,000 adult subjects who already had heart disease. They came from nations in North America, South America, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Middle East – so a rather representative sample.

Participants were questioned about what they ate, and how much milk, veggies, fruits, fish, grains, meat and poultry they ate in the last year. The subjects also supplied details about their drinking and smoking status, and how often they exercised. During the five years of follow up, over 5,000 had either a heart attack or stroke.

Based on calculations, the team saw that those who ate a heart healthy diet cut their risk of death from heart disease by an amazing 35%. What’s more, they also cut their risk of another heart attack by 14%, being diagnosed with heart failure by 28% and suffering a stroke by 19%. All impressive numbers. The key to the heart healthy diet, even though the nations studied varied, was lots of fruits, vegetables and fish, with few red meats.

People often think that medications will cure the issues you have, and this supplies a false sense of security points out Samantha Heller the clinical nutrition coordinator for the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital who wasn’t part of the research. She finds that often primary care doctors don’t emphasize the role that’s played by a healthy lifestyle. This makes it easier for patients to ignore advice on making changes to diet or getting more exercise.

This Helps Against Heart Trouble Continued…

The researchers suggest that doctors advise high-risk patients to look to their diet and eat more of the heart healthy options and less of the things we know to be bad for you. Such a change could substantially cut down on the recurrence of heart events beyond what medication can do on its own.

The research findings tie in with national and international guidelines for those who have cardiovascular disease. Adopt healthy eating habits and make other lifestyle changes that along with taking heart medications approved by your doctor, as this can help you stay healthier… avoid another heart attack or stroke.

What people need to understand is that what you put into your body in terms of foods has a huge impact on health, especially when it comes to the cardiovascular system. Taking meds won’t be of much help if you’re eating a lot of saturated or trans fats, junk food, red and processed meats, refined and processed foods, sweets and fast food. These foods cause all kinds of troubles in the body, increasing inflammation, being a part of the deregulation of sugar and insulin and exacerbating disease of the cardiovascular system. Food needs to be thought of as medicine, so that healthy eating becomes just as much a part of our treatment as the drugs we take or the exercises we do.

To your good health,

This Makes Older People Easier To Scam

Older folks take warning. The numbers tell us that seniors are more vulnerable to fraud than others… now we may know why. It may be that as you age you’re less able to spot shady characters than when you were younger according to the study appearing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It’s this that likely has older folks more easily taken in. In 2010 adults over 60 lost at least $2.9 billion because of financial exploitation, everything from home repair scams to complicated financial swindles. This unfortunate number was up 12% from 2008.

To learn more about the issue, Shelley Taylor of the University of California, Los Angeles and her team conducted a series of studies that compared perceptions of trustworthiness among younger and older people. They saw that older people tended to miss common cues that suggest untrustworthiness. Younger people get that instinctive warning feeling, while older people don’t seem to.

In one project, the team asked 119 adults between 55 and 84 years old along with 24 younger people to look at a stack of 30 pictures of faces that had been rated by another lab on trustworthiness – as trustworthy, neutral or untrustworthy. When the faces were rated trustworthy or neutral the elders’ responses were very much the same as the younger people, but when looking at faces rated as untrustworthy, the older people weren’t as likely to pick up on clues.

After this, the researchers conducted the same experiment with a different group of 44 subjects while their brains were being examined in a functional magnetic resonance imaging machine. This is the type of test that shows parts of the brain, and when they are active. In the younger subjects the scans showed significant activity in an area of the brain called the anterior insula when viewing untrustworthy faces.

The older people showed very little brain activity in this same area. One of the jobs associated with this part of the brain is the ability to interpret sensations in the body that are part of that “gut feeling” people get according to study lead author Elizabeth Castle. Older folks aren’t getting the message that something looks risky… iffy.

This Makes Older People Easier To Scam Continued…

Experts wonder if over the years this part of the brain gets less responsive, perhaps because it’s degrading, or because the neurons that send signals to this area aren’t working properly. This finding certainly contradicts the idea that the current generation of seniors are too well mannered… too trusting… as brain changes may be to blame for their susceptibility.

And though the research only looked as visual cues, the same mechanisms are likely at work when someone gets scammed by a smooth talker on the phone or a legitimate sounding email. Scammers admit that their main ploy is to get a victim in a heightened emotional state that gets them off kilter, reacting without thinking.

The best protections for seniors is to not get caught up in the scam – don’t have the phone conversation, throw the offer that’s “too good to be true” in the trash, don’t attend the “free lunch” seminars and workshops, delete email solicitations and don’t click on a link sent out of the blue by someone you don’t know. Always give yourself at least a 24-hour period to make any decision, this gives you time to think… to engage the rational side of your brain.

To your good health,

How Sleepless Nights Affects Your

We’ve all had them… nights that no matter what you do, what you try, you cannot fall asleep. A whopping 62% of American adults report experiencing some form of sleep problem a few nights each week. That number may be no surprise considering that many of us, before we fall off, busy our minds with a look back at the day – what we should have said or done, things that had to be pushed to tomorrow, bigger issues that aren’t easily solved – and this is a mistake when it comes to working with the body’s own natural cycles in order to get a restful sleep.

After all, how can you fall off once your thoughts have triggered the “fight or flight” stress response? This is a completely natural, though not altogether pleasant, state, where the adrenal glands release adrenaline; this increases your heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and respiration. Adrenaline’s partner, the stress hormone known as cortisol, raises blood sugar levels and mental alertness.

A few hours of this and your understandable frustration at lying awake triggers round after round of that adrenaline-cortisol mix. When you finally give up on sleep and switch on a TV or laptop, the light from the screen squashes your melatonin levels and tricks your mind into thinking it’s daytime. If the content is absorbing, this keeps you attentive… and awake.

By the five-hour point of a sleepless night, the sleep center of your brain will win the tug of war and you’ll nod off. But the sleep pattern won’t be natural because your brain waves are stuck on a high frequency. Tonight’s will be a fitful sleep.

At about seven hours, just when you’ve got to get up, is when your brain waves were finally sliding into the delta phase that’s linked to deep, restorative sleep. What’s worse, it’s also much harder to snap out of this deeper stage of sleep quickly, so it’ll be tougher to get going the next morning. Caffeine is a must.

How Sleepless Nights Affects Your Continued…

When you don’t get a good sleep, here’s how the brain responds the next day…

- The amygdala (the emotional center of the brain) is more active, so you might feel either short tempered or the opposite, silly and giddy.

- The prefrontal cortex (the reasoning/concentration center) is dragging, leaving you feeling unfocused and slow, foggy.

You’re best bet after a sleepless night is to get to bed at your normal time, keep your sleeping space comfortable and quiet, and practice some deep breathing that will work with the natural brain processes involved in sleep. Adopting other healthy sleep habits can also help you sleep better, such changes are generally all that’s needed to conquer those sleepless nights.

However, if you find such nights are a common occurrence, you need to talk to your doctor. There are things that could be causing your problem that are relatively easy to deal with… medications and other substances, certain sleep disorders, depression or anxiety that’s out of the norm… all can impact your sleep. It’s important to find out what the real problem is, and treat it, so that you can get the rest you need.

To your good health,

These 5 Fruits Fight The Flu

Sometimes it’s hard to get the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables a day… but with flu season upon us, there’s never been a better time to seek out health boosting foods. After all, a smart way to protect yourself from illness is to build up the strength of your own immune system. Getting sick this season is not inevitable, you can take some steps to protect yourself.

Here are some tasty fruits that experts suggest show promise in boosting your immune system…

Apples are the most popular source of those beneficial antioxidants in the diet. A single apple has an antioxidant effect that equals 1,500 mg of vitamin C, recognized for decades as being powerful when it comes to colds and flu. The tasty treat is also full of flavonoids that are showing the potential to fight both heart disease and cancer.

Bananas are one of your top food sources of vitamin B6 so they help to cut fatigue, stress, depression and even insomnia. High in magnesium, this soft, tasty fruit gives you nutrients that help keep bones strong as well as potassium that helps to fight high blood pressure and heart disease. They also serve to nourish the “good” bacteria in your digestive system.

Cranberries have more antioxidants than many other popular fruits or vegetables. One serving brings you five times the amount found in diet stars like broccoli. Cranberries function as a natural probiotic that enhances good bacteria in the digestive tract and helps protect you from foodborne illness.

Grapefruit, the dieters’ staple, is naturally packed with vitamin C and also has compounds known as limonoids that bring down cholesterol. The red grapefruit is recognized as a great source of cancer fighter lycopene.

Papayas have 250% of the recommended daily allowance for vitamin C, so a single papaya can boot that oncoming cold. This exotic fruit is loaded with beta-carotene as well as vitamins C and E that work to bring down inflammation through the body. This can lessen the effects of conditions like asthma.

It’s important to recognize that a run down body… one that isn’t resting, isn’t eating the right foods, isn’t managing stress well, offers an inviting place for organisms. And since colds and flu are so much more common in the colder months, if this is you, you’re leaving yourself an open target for a nasty illness.

These 5 Fruits Fight The Flu Continued…

Beyond adding any, or all, of these good for you fruits to your diet, here are some other things you can do to prevent the flu…

1. Wash your hands as the flu virus is spread by both direct (sharing a drink) and indirect (a cough sends germs out into air/onto surfaces) contact.

2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

3. Cover sneezes and coughs with a tissue and throw it away immediately. You can also cough/sneeze into your sleeve and try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

4. Use alcohol based hand sanitizer when you can’t wash with soap and water, but be careful, overuse of these products can cause trouble.

5. Try to avoid, or limit your contact with anyone who has cold/flu symptoms or reports feeling unwell. Someone with flu can spread it to anyone who is within 6 feet.

To your good health,

Fruits and Veggies Fight Cancer

Could color be a guide to a cancer fighting diet? It seems so. There are many vibrantly hued (and tasty) fruits and vegetables you can add to your diet, and by doing so give your body all the natural cancer fighting benefits these foods offer. In fact, it appears color may be key to finding foods that have cancer-fighting properties – rich, bold color shows us that the food contains a lot of good for you nutrients.

The American Cancer Society suggests we all be eating at least five servings of fruits/veggies each day.

A deep, red apple a day

Research supports the truth behind the “apple a day keeps the doctor away” adage. Crunching into a delicious, richly colored apple might help prevent throat, mouth, lung and maybe even breast cancer according to Stacy Kennedy who is a senior nutritionist at the Dana Farber Caner Institute. Apples naturally have a nutrient named quercetin that protects the cell DNA from damage that may bring on cancer. To get the most benefit you need to eat them raw, with skin on, as this is where many of the nutrients are.

Berries, like cranberries, can’t be beat

Another healthy favorite can be bought and frozen so they can be used all year long. These richly colored and very tasty treats have some particularly powerful antioxidants that are thought to keep cancer from growing or spreading to other parts of the body. There’s evidence that the benzoic acid naturally part of cranberries may block long and colon cancers from forming, as well as protecting against some types of leukemia.

Anything orange is a good choice

Serve orange hued options generously, as the bright, rich colors tell us they have higher levels of cancer fighters. The orange veggies (carrots, sweet potatoes, squash and pumpkins) are naturally loaded with carotenoids that have been associated with the prevention of colon, prostate, breast and lung cancers.

Fruits and Veggies Fight Cancer Continued…

And don’t forget those dark, leafy greens

The same depth of color is what gives the dark, leafy greens like kale (a natural source of indoles that stimulate liver detox, help fight cancer), broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts their wealth of nutrients. Research has found that those who eat lots of these types of veggies have lower rates of lung, prostate and even stomach cancers.

Of course you get the most from colorful fruits and veggies when they’re fresh… just picked. How you prepare them matters too… steaming is a great way to cook veggies and keep their nutrients intact. Avoid overcooking your vegetables.

Besides offering natural protection from cancer, colorful fruits and veggies are low in calories so eating them helps you keep your weight in the healthy range, an important way to prevent disease. In fact, two thirds of cancers could be prevented if more people ate right and thus kept themselves at a healthy weight. Statins and Exercise Best For Lowering Cholesterol

Anyone can have high cholesterol, now there’s news on how to get those numbers under control. A new study appearing in The Lancet finds that people who exercise and take statin drugs to bring down their cholesterol can dramatically cut their risk of dying – reassuring to the many who take these drugs today in hopes of doing just that. At present, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate almost 71 million American adults have high cholesterol, a key risk factor when it comes to heart disease. Even with all we know and the technology at our disposal, heart disease remains the leading cause of both disability and death in U.S. men and women.

Lead researcher Peter Kokkinos, a professor in the cardiology department at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, points out that what statins do and what exercise does provide independent benefits, when you combine the two you get even better results.

The research involved analyzing the medical records of over 10,000 veterans who had high cholesterol who’d been treated in veteran’s hospitals in either Washington, D.C. or Palo Alto CA. Of the total, 9,700 were men, 343 were women. The team judged the fitness levels of the subjects by looking at the results of standard treadmill exercise tolerance exams that had been given.

Fewer deaths happened among the subjects who were taking statins and were also fit physically. Over ten years, those who were the most fit had the lowest risk of dying, reducing their risk by about 60%, whether or not they were taking cholesterol lowering medications. The reduction in risk was not explained by other risk factors for heart disease like age, weight, ethnicity, gender or history of heart disease.

The exercise we’re talking about here is regular and moderately intense, not anything considered vigorous. That 30 minutes each day of brisk walking will do it. This regular approach works because is stresses the body, a natural way to make it stronger. About 150 minutes of brisk walking each week is really all you need.

Statins and Exercise Best For Lowering Cholesterol Continued…

The statin drugs we know best are Lipitor (atorvastatin), Lescol (fluvastatin), Pravachol (pravastatin), Crestor (rosuvastatin) and Zocor (simvastatin). Statins have been proven in many trials to reduce heart events and all cause mortality in both men and women who are at risk for cardiovascular disease. Some doctors believe these drugs are best for patients where lifestyle modifications have failed to bring down the numbers. For those who can’t take these drugs because of side effects, the good news is exercise alone will do just as much to reduce your risk.

For those taking statins, you mortality is almost 35% lower than it is for those who don’t take these medications. If you exercise, your mortality rate goes down as your fitness level goes up, to the point where a person can see a 70% reduction in mortality. Pretty impressive numbers – and both actions well within your control.

Important to understand that no one is saying exercise is a replacement for statin drugs. The very best results were seen in those taking satins who were also fit – doing the most they could to keep their bodies healthy, and succeeding.
